SpaceX has announced plans to invest up to $100 billion in a new Starship launch complex in southern Louisiana. The proposed facility, called Starbase Louisiana, would sit near Pecan Island in Vermilion Parish and would expand the company’s launch infrastructure beyond South Texas and Florida.

The project is a plan, not a completed spaceport. SpaceX says construction is expected to begin in 2027, with a first Starship launch targeted for 2029. Those dates depend on engineering work, permits, environmental requirements and the continued development of Starship itself.

What SpaceX says it will build

Reuters reported that SpaceX expects to have access to about 125,000 acres at the Pecan Island site. Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX’s president and chief operating officer, described a self-sustaining spaceport that could include methane production for rocket propellant, power generation, deep-water shipping access, vehicle-processing facilities and possibly an airport.

One important correction to early descriptions of the project: Reuters reported that the Louisiana site will not have rocket-production facilities. SpaceX’s existing Starfactory in South Texas is expected to remain central to manufacturing, while Louisiana would serve as a launch and processing location.

Why Louisiana is part of SpaceX’s plans

Starship is intended to become SpaceX’s next-generation, fully reusable launch system. The company wants more launch capacity for its Starlink network, future missions and other proposed satellite projects. SpaceX currently has one active Starship launch site in South Texas and is building additional pads in Florida.

Louisiana offers a large coastal site with Gulf access and room for multiple launch-related facilities. SpaceX has said the location could support very high launch rates in the future, but those aspirations remain dependent on technical progress and regulatory approvals.

Jobs and local economic expectations

Louisiana’s economic-development office estimates that Starbase Louisiana could create 3,000 direct jobs over the next decade and 8,100 indirect jobs. Those are projections rather than completed employment figures. CNBC also reported that Elon Musk said the site could eventually bring “probably 10,000” jobs to the state.

For the region, the project could bring demand for construction, engineering, energy and maritime work. It would also require long-term planning around housing, roads, utilities and coastal infrastructure if development proceeds on the proposed scale.

Environmental questions remain central

Pecan Island includes wetlands and habitat used by migratory birds and other wildlife. SpaceX has said it will use only a small portion of the available land and will work with government partners on coastal protection and restoration. Those commitments should be judged by future permits, detailed plans and on-the-ground results rather than treated as completed outcomes.

Environmental scrutiny is likely to be significant. CNBC noted that SpaceX faced lawsuits, fines and regulatory criticism connected with its Texas Starbase operations. The Louisiana project will therefore be measured not only by its construction timetable, but also by how the company manages wetlands, noise, debris, water and public oversight.
