Apple Unveils New Mac Mini and Mac Studio Powered by M6 and M5 Ultra Chips for Local AI Workloads

Apple has placed two new chips at the centre of its latest desktop updates: M6 in the Mac mini and M5 Ultra in the Mac Studio. The announcement is aimed at people who need more performance for software development, media work, scientific computing and on-device AI tasks, rather than simply a faster machine for everyday browsing.
The distinction between the two products matters. M6 is intended for the smaller Mac mini, while M5 Ultra is Apple’s high-end option for the Mac Studio. Both improve AI-related hardware, but they are designed for very different budgets and workloads.
What Apple says is new in M6
Apple describes M6 as its first 2-nanometre chip. It has a 12-core CPU made up of two super cores, four performance cores and six efficiency cores, alongside a 12-core GPU with Neural Accelerators. Apple also says M6 has a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, supports up to 32GB of unified memory and delivers up to 170GB/s of memory bandwidth.
For a Mac mini user, those specifications are most relevant when several demanding tasks have to run at once: compiling code, editing high-resolution media, indexing large files or running smaller AI models locally. The benefit is not that every task suddenly becomes an AI workload; it is that the CPU, GPU and Neural Engine have more room to share work when an application can use them.
Why M5 Ultra is a different class of chip
M5 Ultra is built for the Mac Studio and is aimed at heavier professional workloads. Apple says it uses UltraFusion to connect two dual-die M5 Max chips into a quad-die architecture. The chip can include up to a 36-core CPU, an 80-core GPU, up to 512GB of unified memory and 1.2TB/s of memory bandwidth.
Those figures matter for projects that are limited by memory capacity or by moving large amounts of data between processing components. Apple specifically highlights complex video work, 3D rendering, scientific analysis and running large AI models on the device.
Local AI is useful, but it is not a cloud replacement for everyone
The new desktops make local AI work more practical for some users. Apple says its developer frameworks can use the CPU, GPU and Neural Engine to run and fine-tune models on a Mac. For developers, that can mean testing a model privately on a workstation instead of sending every task to an external service.
That does not mean a desktop automatically replaces cloud infrastructure. The right choice still depends on the model size, the number of users, the software being used and whether a project needs large-scale training or deployment. A local machine may be a strong fit for prototyping, creative work and private experimentation, while a larger service may still be needed for high-volume workloads.
The practical takeaway
Apple’s desktop refresh is less about one headline benchmark and more about range. M6 gives the Mac mini a more capable platform for everyday professional work and local AI tasks. M5 Ultra gives Mac Studio users substantially more memory bandwidth and graphics capacity for projects where waiting for a render, simulation or model response has a real cost.
Buyers should compare the announced configurations with the specific software and model sizes they expect to use. The highest specifications are most meaningful when the workload can actually take advantage of the additional memory, GPU capacity and accelerated AI hardware.
